How it works
We created a longlist of every highlight in every Australian guidebook and asked our entire Lonely Planet community to vote for their top 20 experiences. We also took into account whether the places had a sustainable tourism policy and what efforts they made to protect the environment or support their communities, giving those places that did extra points. After some mathematical alchemy, we ended up with a score for each entry in our top 500.
Special features
- Original artwork featured on the cover spine and internal pages created by artists from Maruku, a not-for-profit art and craft corporation, owned and operated by the Aṉangu (Aboriginal people from the Western and Central Deserts of Australia)
- Each of the 500 listings includes a See it! Section which provides practical tips for planning a trip and visiting responsibly
- Inspirational photography that highlights Australia’s beauty
